SC judge DY Chandrachud avoids socialising, starts his day at 3:30 am for ‘me-time’–Economic Times

After finishing off his work, Justice DY Chandrachud likes to spend an hour or two reading.
Being a Supreme Court judge isn’t an easy job. From gender justice to human rights law, DY Chandrachud, who is known for his landmark verdicts on Sabarimala temple and Section 377, has to go through 250 cases every week.

During an event in Mumbai, he shared details on how he manages a variety of cases, and balance the demands of work and his interests.

“As Supreme Court judges, we have to read around 250 cases every week. There is a particular format when it comes to petitions. From murder to commercial disputes, we get a variety of cases. What I do is: I don’t socialise. I wake up at 3.30 am every morning and that’s the best part of my day, when I do most of my work. I try to wrap up by 9.30 am or 10 am. After work gets over by, say, 8 pm, I spend an hour or two reading. That’s my me-time. In this sort of a work environment, you need to create that space for yourself where you can say that however important the case before me is, I am going to give myself the time to do something outside of work.”
