The UIDAI is considering new rules that would prevent private entities from storing Aadhaar photocopies, as it prepares to introduce a more secure digital verification system aimed at reducing misuse and strengthening data protection.

UIDAI and the Government of India are gearing upto release a new rule. This rule will be aimed at discouraging entities like hotels and event organisers from taking photocopies of customers Aadhaar Card’s and storing them in physical form.  

“The new rule has been approved by the authority and will be notified soon. It will mandate registration of offline verification- seeking entities like hotels, event organisers. The objective is to discourage paper-based Aadhaar verification,” Bhuvnesh Kumar quoted as saying in a PTI report.  

Why this rule change?

UIDAI CEO Kumar told PTI that this practice by Hotels and event organisers of taking the photocopies of Aadhaar cards is against the Aadhaar act. Moreover this rule will also mandate the registration of the entities that seek Aadhaar based verification of individuals. This will result in safeguarding of the privacy of the song. These are rule changes which will be enhancing the privacy of users.

“The ease of verification will enhance offline verification without the use of paper while maintaining privacy of users or any risk of their Aadhaar data getting leaked for misuse,” Kumar said.

What changes the new rule will mandate?

The new rule will provide entities seeking Aadhaar based verification access to new technology enabling identity verification by scanning a QR code or connecting with a new Aadhaar app launched recently. There will be a greater transparency in the process of the verification.  

Since the above mentioned rule change will use the newly launched Aadhaar app which offers a lot of features. Some of which have been mentioned below. Therefore it is important to know about the functionality of the app.

Offline mode access: View your saved Aadhaar details without internet connection after the initial setup, though online access unlocks full functionality.

Usage history monitoring: Track when, where, and how your Aadhaar has been used through the app’s built-in activity log for added security.

Multi-Profile management: Add Aadhaar cards for up to five family members in one app when linked to the same mobile number, making it easy to manage household identities
