ITR can be filed directly on the income tax department’s e-filing portal free of cost, either on your own or with the help of a Chartered Accountant.

September 15, 2025, is the last date to file the income tax return (ITR) for individuals who are not liable for income tax audit for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26). The ITR can be filed directly on the income tax department’s e-filing portal free of cost, either on your own or with the help of a Chartered Accountant (CA).

Apart from the tax department’s portal, there are several third-party websites that provide ITR filing services for payment of a fee. While filing on the government portal is free, using the services of CAs or specialised tax filing websites usually comes with a fee. These websites typically offer different kinds of plans depending on the number of sources of taxpayers’ income, its complexity and the level of assistance required. Read more to know more about how much fee you need to pay for filing ITR through these private portals.

What are the different filing options?

Broadly, most online platforms offer three types of ITR filing plans:

1. Self-filing: Taxpayers upload documents and complete the ITR filing themselves, with basic backend assistance for data handling.

2. Assisted filing: The taxpayer uploads documents, and an automated system designed with CA inputs helps complete the filing.

3. CA-assisted filing: The platform connects the taxpayer with an in-house tax expert or CA, often through a call or video consultation, to resolve queries before filing.
