डॉक्टर मित्रांनो — सखोल मनन करण्याची गरज —सविस्तर माहितीसाठी इंडियन एक्सप्रेस मधील बातमी वाचावी.

1. नुकताच  दिल्ली मध्ये डॉक्टरांनी एक मोर्चा काढला होता —त्यांच्यावर होणाऱ्या हल्ल्याचा निषेध करण्यासाठी

2. तसेच त्यांच्यावर फौजदारी गुन्हे दाखल करण्याच्या वाढत्या प्रवृतीचा निषेध करण्याचा त्यांचा मानस होता

3. त्याचबरोबर डॉक्टरांनी यापुढे केवळ generic medicines ध्यावी असा जो सरकारने फतवा काढला आहे त्यांचाही त्यांना निषेध करावयाचा होता.

4. पण मला असे वाटते की [ लेखकाला—श्री विक्रम पटेल — जे हार्वर्ड मेडिकल स्चूल मध्ये प्रोफेसर आहेत ] की डॉक्टरवर का हल्ले होत आहेत त्यांची कारणमीमांसा करावयास हवी. विशेषतः आपण विचार करावयास हवा की आपल्याविरुद्ध गैरव्यवहार आणि निष्काळजीपणाचे आरोप सातत्याने का होत आहेत ? पेशंट व डॉक्टर यामधील विश्वासाच्या नात्याला तडा जात चालला आहे का ? विश्वास कमी कमी हा होत चालला आहे ?

5. एक दशकापूर्वी ५००० भारतीयांची चाचणी घेतली गेली होती व त्यात पोलीस ख्यात्या खालोखाल — डॉक्टरांना  भ्रष्टाचाराबद्दल जबाबदार धरले गेले होते. त्यामध्ये खालील बाबींचा प्रामुख्याने उल्लेख केला गेला होता

• Kickbacks for unnecessary clinical tests or referrals

• an irrational use of medical procedures for commercial gain,

• illegal payments from corporations in return for prescribing their over-priced products, and

• bribes for obtaining health care services are everyday examples, but this corruption now extends to even more disturbing instances of criminal acts, such as collusion with sex-determination and the illegal organ trade.

इतर देशात आरोग्य सेवे  कडे—लीकाना गरिबीतून बाहेर काढण्यासाठी —   प्रमुख धोरण म्हणून पाहिले जाते तर आपल्याकडे आरोग्य सेवा दरिद्रता चे प्रमुख कारण म्हणून पहिले जाते. या बाबतीत —काही तरी चांगले व्हावे म्हणून ——डॉक्टरकडून प्रतिसाद अपेक्षित होता पण तसे झाले नाही.

डॉक्टर बंधुनो

1. To do this, we will need to restate our commitment to evidence-based medicine, which champions the use of affordable and effective treatments through a universal health care system.

2. We will need to actively cooperate with the government as it implements its progressive National Health Policy, and

3. become an indispensable partner of the movement that is so urgently needed to repair our broken health care system.

4. We should be advocating for and celebrating efforts to reduce health care costs.

5. We should stand in solidarity with our people to hold the government and the private sector accountable when they fall short of their responsibilities.

6. When the government insists on our using generic medicines, instead of viewing this as an intrusion into the privileged relationship we enjoy with our patients, we should demand action to assure the quality of these medicines and ensure that the cheapest generic drugs are sold by chemists —

7. we should welcome the government’s initiatives to strengthen the oversight of medical education and our own clinical practice, for we have miserably failed to do so ourselves.

8. And, most of all, let us stop serving the interests of our corporate masters, from the hospital chains which have commodified the most sacred aspects of our profession and our humanity, to the pharmaceutical and biomedical device industries, to which we have sold our souls for trinkets of gold.
