PNB customers in Greater Noida allege nearly Rs 35 crore went missing from accounts; several employees, including the branch manager, suspended.
Noida: Customers of Punjab National Bank in Greater Noida have alleged that nearly Rs 35 crore went missing from their savings accounts and fixed deposits. Several account holders claimed that they had neither authorised the transactions nor received alerts about the fund transfers, officials said on Wednesday.Police said the bank management had suspended several employees, including the branch manager, and a case was registered at the Beta-2 police station, which has jurisdiction over the branch. The bank has assured authorities that it will address the customers’ complaints, officials said.
Vijendra Singh, one of the affected customers, told reporters that his savings account, which earlier held around Rs 87-88 lakh, now showed a balance of just Rs 1 lakh. Singh said he was a farmer and had received compensation from the authority.
Another customer, Haneef Khan, said he held a savings account at the bank’s branch in the Pi-1 area of Aichhar in Greater Noida. He alleged that his account balance of Rs 39 lakh was no longer visible.
“I neither received any message nor signed any document authorising the transfer of funds,” Khan said.
Zakir, another account holder, alleged that Rs 9.5 lakh had gone missing from his account. He said he had received no text message from the bank about the transactions and learnt about the alleged fraud only when he visited the branch.
Police said the matter is under investigation.
