Mobile phone companies are likely to face stiff accounting and tech challenges once the goods & services tax (GST) regime is implemented from July 1 in some 12-odd telecom circles that have multiple states within their territory, said tax experts and sector analysts.

Telcos, they said, may be compelled to make huge additional investments in overhauling and re-configuring their existing IT and billing systems to undertake the complex task of splitting revenues stemming from roaming, interconnect and termination charges in these multi-state telecom circles to ensure GST payments compliance in each constituent state. Rough industry estimates peg such additional costs to run over Rs 300 crore. Key multistate telecom circles include Delhi, Maharashtra & Goa, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Northeast, West Bengal, UP-West, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Bihar.
